Autumn Style for London dwellers

Better late than never! We finally appear to be having our summer in the UK, which has arrived across the first week of September. However, according to the meteorological calendar, autumn has begun, so whilst I write looking out at London’s clear blue skies dotted with white fluffy clouds and a blazing sun, please indulge me as I look ahead to all the richness that Autumn has to offer.

When the leaves start to change colour and a gentle crispness fills the air, we know that autumn has arrived. It's a season of transformation, not only in nature but also in fashion. The time has come to stow away those breezy summer outfits and embrace the warm and cozy styles that autumn brings. In this guide, we'll explore ways to remain stylishly sharp for the office while embracing these warm rustic tones, ensuring you step out into London in style.

Embracing the Essence of Autumn but with a London vibe

Autumn is a season that encourages us to play with layers, textures, and colours. As we have seen filtering through fashion over the last few years, it is not so much about ‘trends’ but defining our individual style and letting your true style DNA shine through. This season is no different. Still, it can be hard to get a balance with Autumn style which feels a natural match in a rural backdrop, but perhaps more tricky to harmonise with an urban setting. Let's dive into the top autumn styles that are always guaranteed to make you look good.

1. Rich Earthy Tones

Autumn is synonymous with warm and rich earthy tones. Shades like deep burgundy, rustic orange, and olive green take centre stage. London’s landscape can transform into a mosaic of these colours, and your wardrobe can do the same. Incorporate these hues into your outfits through coats, sweaters, and accessories. A burgundy trench coat paired with a classic white shirt and jeans not only keeps you warm but also exudes a timeless elegance that fits a city vibe. In fact the yin and yang of cool airy greys and burnt tones compliment each other beautifully.

2. Cozy Knits for Autumn

When the temperature starts to drop, cozy knits helps us to stay snug and stylish. This year, as ever, oversized cable-knit sweaters are stealing the show. Opt for neutral colours like beige and grey, which are versatile and pair well with a leather pencil skirt for the office, and almost anything in your wardrobe. My favourite item of clothing is probably a lightweight piece of knitwear, generally a wrap or shawl-type jumper. A high quality piece of knitwear is a wardrobe staple. I was delighted to discover knitwear brand Cotswold Knit offering stylish and high quality knitwear. These pieces are made using preserved techniques such a ‘linking’ and ‘full fashioned’. I studied fashion and knitwear design at University (more years ago than I care to remember…) and I recall spending many painful hours hunched over a linking machine to complete my final year collection, such is the painstaking attention to detail required across these processes. Trust me when I say this brand offers the highest quality knitwear you could wish for and in stylish, unique and luxurious designs. Throw one of their chunky knit cardigans over a chiffon dress and pair with high boots for the office, or pair it with high-waisted jeans for an effortlessly chic London look that's perfect for a leisurely stroll.

3. Pre-loved

I am a hybrid London and Cotswold dweller, so I recently donned my trusty walking boots and headed across fields to the annual Moreton Show in the North Cotswolds which falls on the first Saturday in September. I visited with my dear friend the chef and food writer The Wyldflours (do check out her blog for delicious and contemporary seasonal recipes) to see what the fuss was all about. It certainly did not disappoint - there was a lot to cover. I was overjoyed to see all the wonderful individual clothing and accessories brands offering their delectable collections with an emphasis on quality, sustainability and originality. I had the fortune to stumble upon thought-provoking brand Cashoo selling up-cycled cashmere accessories. All fabric is re-used cashmere sourced from Oxfam - recycling at its best! I treated myself to a pair of beige-toned fingerless gloves which I know I will be very grateful for when standing on the platform awaiting my London commute.

4. Plaid Is A Great Autumn Trend

Plaid patterns are a perennial favourite for autumn, and this year is no exception. For a quintessentially British look, layer a plaid blazer over a turtleneck sweater and complete the ensemble with ankle boots. Don't be afraid to mix and match different plaid patterns for a bold and confident London statement.

5. Leather Love for London Pavements

Leather has transcended its rebellious image to become an autumn wardrobe essential. A well-fitted leather jacket adds an edge to any outfit, whether you're headed to the office or meeting friends for a weekend brunch. For a contemporary twist, explore leather dresses or skirts in deep rich shades. London’s autumnal pavements provide the perfect backdrop to showcase your leather pieces.

6. Statement Accessories

Autumn fashion is all about the details, and statement accessories are the perfect way to elevate your look. Chunky scarves, wide-brimmed hats, and knee-high boots are making a comeback this season. These accessories not only keep you warm but also allow you to experiment with different styles and silhouettes. Embrace the power of a well-thought-out accessory to make a lasting autumnal impression.

Life tip - I have recently discovered a fantastic company Organised and Inspired who are expert in space organising - no job too big and no task to small. Indeed, there is a strong link between an organised space and feeling a sense of control in our lives. When I spoke with the owner Andrea she explained how she can ‘shop her accessories’ having organised her items into well thought-out storage so that she can actually see what she has. I don’t know about you, but I need that in my life/accessories drawer!

Autumn Trends: Stand out against the London Landscape

What we wear is a form of self-expression and never more so in a diverse city. Navigating the autumn trends in a busy and bustling London metropolis requires a balance of style and practicality. Here's how to seamlessly incorporate these trends into your wardrobe:

1. Adaptable Layers

UK weather can be unpredictable, with rain showers followed by bursts of sunshine. To stay prepared, opt for adaptable layers that you can easily put on or take off. A lightweight knit jumper under a trench coat, for example, ensures you're ready for sudden weather changes while maintaining a polished look.

2. Comfortable Footwear

London’s hardened pavements, cobblestone streets and bustling public transportation, comfortable footwear is a must. A stylish trainer with a slightly raised platform or sturdy boot will provide provide the comfort and support you need to navigate the city with ease. I love DLSport for stylish trainers that are also ergonomically designed for your supreme comfort. Choose versatile colors like black, grey, navy or brown to effortlessly match your outfits or go for a stand-out colour to make a statement with your feet!

3. Mix of High and Low Fashion

A key look nowadays is about mixing high-end pieces with high-street finds - think a designer coat perhaps cleverly sourced from your favourite pre-loved store or online platform teamed with a great-fitting pair of H&M jeans. This blend of luxury and accessibility is today, what contemporary style is all about.

4. Weather-Resistant Fabrics

As autumn brings its fair share of rain and wind, invest in weather-resistant fabrics. Go ‘Gorpcore’ and look for coats and jackets with water-resistant coatings to stay dry while looking fashionable. This is where practicality meets style, a quintessential aspect of modern-day style.

5. Personal Touches

While staying ‘on-trend’ is exciting, adding personal touches to your outfits is what truly sets you apart. Whether it's a vintage brooch on your scarf, your favourite belt or a unique handbag, these individualistic elements reflect your personality and make your outfit one-of-a-kind.

The Intersection of Autumn and Individual Style

London can be a melting pot of cultures and styles, and autumn is the perfect season to celebrate this diversity. As you embrace the autumn trends that resonate with you, remember that your individual style is nowadays what makes fashion. Experiment, mix, and match until you find the perfect balance between the trends and your unique personality.

1. Sustainable Choices

Autumn trends are not just about what's fashionable; they're also about making responsible choices. Consumers are increasingly turning to sustainable and ethically produced clothing. Consider investing in timeless pieces that will last beyond the season, reducing the need for constant wardrobe updates.

2. Vintage Revival

Paradoxically, pre-loved is the way forward! Autumn provides an ideal canvas to incorporate great shops finds or your favourite vintage pieces into your wardrobe. A retro trench coat or a classic silk scarf can add a touch of nostalgia to your ensemble. Explore local vintage shops and markets to uncover hidden gems that tell their own stories.

3. Confidence is Key

No matter which autumn trends you embrace, wearing them with confidence is essential. Great style in London is not just about the clothes; it's about the attitude you carry. Whether you're rocking a plaid skirt or a leather jacket, wear it with the confidence that defines London’s fashion culture.

Final Thoughts

As autumn arrives, the city transforms into a tapestry of warm tones, cozy layers, and stylish ensembles. Embrace the rich earthy hues, indulge in luxurious knits, and confidently mix and match patterns and textures. Remember, the essence of autumn fashion trends lies not just in the clothes themselves, but in the way you infuse them with your individuality. So step out onto those stylish streets with confidence, knowing that you're showcasing your very best autumn looks.
